The River - River Report

The last salmon of 2003 has long since passed under the bridge on the Pinware River, and what a season it was. Salmon returns, not only to the Pinware, but other rivers of Southern Labrador and the Northern Peninsula of Newfoundland, were up this year, both for multi-sea winter salmon and grilse.

Large salmon began to enter the Pinware around mid June, with the first reported catch June 20th. I had an opportunity to speak with many of our guests this year, and there is no question that they were impressed with both the numbers of fish they saw, and hooked. Weeks of 100 plus fish hooked in the Camp were the norm through the month of July, and even though the numbers of fish were less throughout August, good catches were reported and many smiles could be seen on the faces of our guests.

It is of course hard to predict what the future will bring, but we are optimistic that the runs of will again be strong this year on the Pinware. The closure of the Greenland fishery seems to have had a positive impact this past season, and there is no reason to suspect that runs will not continue to increase.

We would like to take this opportunity to express our thanks to our 2003 guests, many of whom we look forward to seeing again this year. For those of you that have not yet been to the Pinware, we have some great space available and would be happy to supply you with all of the information you need to book your trip.

Have a great winter and we look forward to hearing from you soon.

Mike Crosby
